Lafayette Prep adds a SECOND GRADE class!
In mid-May, Lafayette Preparatory Academy responded to the requests of families in the community and opened a classroom for second grade students. UMSL, our sponsor, very quickly recognized the need for this classroom and endorsed the decision. We welcome all families interested in a high quality education for second graders to enroll before all spaces are taken.
As our families enroll, and we make final preparations for the opening, we are planning on some fun to "Get the Ball Rolling." Join us at Flamingo Bowl for food, fun, and bowling from 6 pm - 9 pm on June 14th. We will have bowling on a first-come, first-served basis, and enough food and drinks for all. A raffle, silent auction, and wine pull will add to the fun! Most importantly, we want our supporters and families to get to know each other. Come join the fun! Tickets can be purchased at brown paper tickets.
We will also be having a book drive. Bring a new or gently used book and receive a raffle ticket to be entered for a chance to win a bowling party for 10!

December 12, 2012
At LPA, we know that in order to fulfill our mission, we must secure funding that supplements our program. To that end, we submitted and received the Federal CSP Grant. Very specifically, this money will support our purchase of Smartboards and tablets for students. We will also have ample money to build an excellent library to support our intense focus on literacy. Additionally, we will also be able to purchase supplies for a violin program and a physical fitness program. Thank you to those at DESE who decided to support LPA and our vision of quality education in the heart of St. Louis.

Susan Marino Chosen as Head of School
July 25, 2012
We're excited to announce that we officially have a Head of School. Susan Marino is a Soulard resident dedicated to the continued revitalization of St. Louis by way of educational reform. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Arts Teaching from Lindenwood University. For five years, Susan worked with at-risk students in a small alternative school designed for expulsions and drop-outs from SLPS, Jennings, Hazelwood, and more. Susan was deeply involved in the development and implementation of the program as a teacher, Director, and Area Supervisor who oversaw the operation of 7 small schools. For the last seven years, Susan has taught High School Language Arts and served as a leader in a traditional public school. Susan has been the PLC Facilitator of her Professional Learning Community (PLC), which focuses on collaboration, data analysis, and data-driven instruction. She also serves as a member of the "High Schools That Work" (HSTW) Leadership Team that focuses on increasing the rigor and relevance in school curriculum. She specifically led the development and implementation of a program called "Failure is Not an Option," which requires all students to master all objectives. Collaboratively, she developed a support system both during and after school to meet this end. Her past and present leadership roles exemplify her commitment to collaboration, data analysis, data-driven instruction, rigor and relevance in school curriculum, and providing the support and intervention necessary to guide all students to success. In addition to her career, Susan volunteers with young people in St. Louis in several capacities. For three years, she has been a mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. She has also developed and led an after-school Fitness Club for Pre-School students at an independent school in St. Louis. She believes that each child can and will be successful given the appropriate guidance and support.
